Wrapping Technique

The pictures above are some quick sketches I drew to start incorporating the wrapping of the building in the pipes used to collect the water from the bridge. It also shows where the air and water intersect. I do feel like I would like to exagerate the look of the pipes wrapping the building; almost in a wild vine/weaving like fashion.

Diagrams

The above diagrams shows the water movement collected from the bridge, as well as the air intake. Where the water and air intake intersect is where the filtration process takes place. From the water and air diagrams formed the two main spaces in my spatial diagram.

Entergy

The harvest electrivity for my quarantine unit, I will use one of two ways to produce it. The first to come across my mind was to use wind turbines. On the other hand, I was also given the advice to use piezoelectrics. In the use of piezoelectrics, could passing on the bridge over head would generate the power simply by crossing over small bumps in the road.

Access to the Quarantine Cell

Access to the quarantine cell will be difficult considering my site is located directly underneathe the bridge. To make a quick exchange between the ship and the quarantine cell, my plan is to create a jetway like structure that will extend from the cell to the top deck of the ship. To do this, the ship has to pull within 20 feet of the bridge to have adequate clearance space. Once the exhange takes place, the "shipway" will contract back into itself.

Also, a second plan is to have an elevator connected from the quarantine cell to the dock. To do this without an elevation shaft, a steel cable will be stretched from the cell to the ground, and the elevator will glide along the cable. The purpose of the elevator is to enable easy echange of supplies to and from the cell.

Initial Design

In the initial design I took into account two main ideas: Separation of wind/water spaces, and the continuance of the bridges structure elements.

The higher portion of the building consist of the spaces that use water, like the kitchen and the bathroom. The lower addition of the building consist of spaces in which oxygen is the element most used, such as the exercise room, living room, and bedroom areas.

The second main idea was to incorporate the bridges existing structure into the support of the building. In this attempt, I mirrored some of the effects of the columns used in the upper portion of the bridge.

A Quarantine Cell: Site

I am starting to diagram simple aspects of the site I have chosen for my quarantine cell. As of now, I have chosen the space on the dock in between the two bridges for several reasons: 1) It has quick and easy access to and from the cruise ship 2) It is located in a spot that picks up heavy winds, which can be used to generate power 3)It is located directly off the river, which would allow the structure to an abundant water supply

In the diagram above:
-The light blue color shows the spot where the cruise ship docks.
-The red line indicates the route from the ship to the quarantine facility.
-The white area indicated the initial area of the quarantine facility.

Week Two Progress

Week Two Progress
Yesterday(Thursday), I went to the laser cutter and cut out some pieces made of acrylic for two small water chambers. I tried using a thicker PVC pipe instead of the acrylic, but it just didn't work out. So far, however, the acrylic is working well. I am still working trying to seal up all the gaps though, and then I'm going to fill them with water and see how it goes. I'm not sure if it is really a necessity to have two chambers, it seems like one may be sufficient. In the first picture, I also added the arc like structure that will house the cooling/heating gel. If everything goes well, I hope to get some silicone to cover part of it and make the mask this weekend. Overall, I feel like things are moving along, but I'm sure things will change as I begin to test it.

Materials

The following are some materials I hope I can utilize in the development of my model.

I really like the idea of using silicone as an insulation layer on the outside of my model. I saw bakery, like in the picture, and thought it would work well in my design. Not only would it allow the transfer of heat or cool, it would also add somewhat of a cushion for the neck.

I've been sitting, trying to think of what the best material to use that would be flexible, yet hold water at the same time. After a little research, I found that I can use an acrylic based plastic, which is somewhat flexible, and if used correctly, can also hold water. So for the sake of my first concept model, I feel like acrylic may be the easiest material to manipulate into what I need it to do.

To the left is a picture of some PVC hose. It is rubber based and come is many different sizes. The use I will get out of these different types of hose is the ability to transfer the dirty and clean are through the water and back into the mouth and nasal cavity. It will also be used in the movement of water.

In my design, I also wanted to incorporate a heating/cooling system. I felt that by incorporating something else that is useful into the design, it would make the mask itself more desirable to wear. So I will use gel that can be either heated or cooled to complete this task. Not only will it be easy to use, but it will also hold its hot or cold temperatures for hours.

Water-based Air Purification

http://www.thermaxaf.com/af2_features.php

The above link has a video that gives an idea of the technology I plan to use in the purification of the air to be used in my mask. In the video, the company, Thermax, uses the power of water not only to clean the air, but they also utilize it in carpet cleaning as well, which is their main product. Just to end my curiosity, I called Thermax to see how this really worked, and it is actually pretty simple. Water is a natural purifier, and can take out as much as 97% of dust, virus strand, bacteria, etc. All the air has to do is travel through the water. It made me wonder why no one had really caught on to this idea before. I guess the only thing I ever thought of when it came to water purification was the purification of the water itself and not the use of water to actually purify something else.

So I plan to incorporate this idea into my design to protect against inhalation Anthrax. By the use of a mechanical type pump to run the air through a system, the air being breathed in should be almost completely free of all harmful bacteria, virus', etc.

Week One Progress

SITE
I have completed to site models, one made of plaster and another I developed on Rhino and cut out using the laser cutter. Considering it was my first time using Rhino and the 3D printer, I'd say my attempt was pretty successful. My site area is focused on the head and neck area of the human body. Besides the head being kind of creepy, it will allow me to start developing my ideas to be able to see how it will fit/affect the body.

CONCEPT
The concept of my project is to develop a mask able to filter out the Anthrax bacteria so the user will not inhale the deadly stran. I will be focusing on providing my device to the US Postal Service, because of the outbreak of Anthrax in 2001 by terrorist. Terrorism still exist today, and the threat of another serious outbreak is always on hand. As in 2001, the mail system could be an easy target, because it is so easy to spread the bateria by constant transfer. My goal is to protect the Postal employees from getting infected with Anthrax by inhalation.

STRATEGY
My initial approach was to develop a mask to filter out the bateria, but mask are a pain to wear and it is even more painful to be seen wearing a mask at times. So I wanted to get away from your typical white face mask as much as possible; however, I don't think it is possible to fully get away from the mask itself. So I thought that if I incorporated another idea with the mask, it may make the mask more acceptable to wear. I thought about it, and I have noticed that the Postal vehicals do no have A/C's installed in them. Plus, the mailman is constantly walking in hot or cold conditions. I thought it would be nice to creat a device that would fit around the neck of the user, which would cool or warm the person wearing the devise. After a brief talk with my mailman, I recieved positive feedback on the idea. The only problem is it would be two different systems when, initially, my only goal was to create a device to protect against inhaling Anthrax. I am currently brainstorming, trying to figure out a way to combine the two. In my studio desk critque, I was given the idea of filtering the air by means of water itself. I think this is a great idea and I plan on moving in that direction at this point.

Project 1: Quarantine and The Body

My focus on this project will be to develop an instrument designed to prevent the Anthrax bacteria from entering the mouth/nasal cavity through inhalation. My narrative is focused on protecting employees of the postal system, because of the spread of Anthrax though the mail in 2001. One of my goals is to avoid the typical white mask covering half the face, but rather develop a device that filters while providing some other type of service to the user. By incorporating another service into the device, I am hoping this will allow the user to be more accepting to wearing the filter, because who really wants to wear an ugly mask over their face in public? I am currently researching different materials that can be used to stop the bacteria, but also in the making of the device itself.
